Inverell Market Report 8th August 2017

Cattle: There was a reduction in numbers with the rain a likely factor. Young cattle and cows made up the bulk of the offering, although there were very few weaners. Grown heifers were in reasonable numbers, and there was only a limited supply of grown steers. Demand was weaker throughout with most of the regular buyers in attendance.
Feedlot competition was weaker with large numbers available throughout the system and some feedlots not quoting. The recent rain, while welcome did little to clear that supply at this stage. Heifer weaners sold to a cheaper trend of as much as 8c/kg. The light and medium weight yearling steers to restock and feed saw a cheaper trend of 10c to 12c/kg. Heavy yearling feeder steers were much cheaper with quality a factor in price change. Of the young cattle the yearling heifers to restock and feed were least affected, market trends were still cheaper however not as great as those in the steers.
There was limited demand from processors for the well finished grown steers and heifers. This resulted in cheaper trends. The cow market held up reasonably well with the better 3 and 4 score heavy weights only 1c or 2c/kg cheaper. Local sales; Doak Partnership heifers $3.00/kg 305kg $1005.

Sheep: There was quite a reduction in the overall numbers with lambs down by 1,000 head and sheep reducing by two thirds. Heavy weight lambs were well supplied with condition mostly good. Overall however, the quality of the offering was mixed with a fair percentage of secondary quality and plainer condition lots penned. The usual buyers were in attendance.
Once again there was little in the way of re-stocker competition on anything other than some light weight Merino lambs. Market trends varied with the secondary quality and well finished trade weights selling to a cheaper trend, back by $12/head and more in places.
Well finished heavy weight lambs sold to a slightly dearer trend for the heaviest weight classes. The lighter end of the heavy weights sold to a cheaper trend.
The reduced supply of sheep attracted strong competition to show a significantly dearer trend through all weight and fat classes. Local sales Anthony & Gary Harper wethers $96
